Thing #23

Well, I have finished this on-line course today, which is my last day at work. It is with a real feeling of accomplishment that I have added to my knowledge of online resources just at the time I am retiring from work. It is opening up another world to me, and I know I will enjoy all these sites as time goes by. I will especially enjoy using the LibraryThing site.

All in all, it was a very productive way to spend my last weeks at KL.

Thing#22

I really liked the Gutenberg Project books. What a great way to collect old manuscripts so we do not lose our past. I was already familiar with the Library's ebooks, but I took a look around anyway. It is amazing to find the Audio ebooks in such a variety of languages.

Thing#21

I posted a library podcast to my Yahoo pods site. I hope that is sufficient.

Thing#20

You were absolutely right that YouTube has a lot of junk on it. I had to go to travel videos to find something decent. It is an interesting site, but I don't think I would waste a lot of my time here.

Thing#19

Well, I posted some books on this site, and it was great fun seeing what other people had in their libraries. I added a very eclectic bunch of books that I have enjoyed over the years. I will go back to this site many times over the next few years.

Thing#18

I did try to post my Zoho wiring to my blog, but I couldn't quite get it to work. Some area of this is escaping me. It was interesting to write online and see a page so much like Microsoft Word. This is a very good service.

Thing#17

My last post should be #17. I goofed

Thing#18

I had quite a time adding my favorite restaurant to sjlearning2.0! It took me more time than I like to admit to add anything at all. but I finally managed it, although my colors are not strictly up to par. I am just glad that I got it done.

Thing#16

I have been lost in the world of wikis for quite a while and finally found my way out! I really liked the one from Princeton Public Library about book reviews--I saw some books I would like to read, and saw some reviews about books that I have already read that gave a very different view of the book.

I think it is a good use of wikis for libraries to share handouts for computer classes, storytimes, etc. We can all learn from one another and don't have to start everything from scratch.

Thing#15

I have read the prognostications on the library of the future. I agree that we must embrace technology, and can use it with efficiency to present Ebooks of all kinds, such as test guides, Nolo press legal books, science experiments, missions, encyclopedias, almanacs, etc. We could save a large forest by just updating this type of information and presenting it online to everyone. At least for the near future, librarians will have to be available to help people access this information.

There should also be more services like Tutor.com available for students. Better to spend tax money on linking people to experts in subject areas, especially now that we are using non-professionals to man so many of the service desks. This would provide a lot more "bang for the buck" than paper and questionable assistance.

However, I believe that we should preserve the physical library in some form as a place of ideas, knowledge and the enjoyment of learning. Perhaps the bookstore look has a future as a place with comfortable chairs, lots of computers, a fireplace and a coffee bar. Sounds good to me!

Thing#13

I have been messing around with del.icio.us, and ended up opening an account. I now have so many different accounts that I have to standardize my signins so that I don't forget them.

Thing#12

I have now created my own rollyo search engine. It will be fun to use it when I am in a hurry.

Thing #11

I have been exploring Housing Maps. This is an easy site to work with. It gives loads of information on houses, condos, townhouses, etc. that are for sale or for rent. I checked the South Bay, which gave places in this area in various price ranges, which you can choose before you explore the site. I have used this site before to check housing in the Las Vegas area, and it is very useful for comparison shopping for property. I don't know how really up-to-date their information is, but it seems to change weekly. The search engine used here is Google, with Google Maps and Craigslist information. All in all, a very useful site.

Thing #10

I got into the generator and found a fascinating spot that generates bridge hands. It will even shuffle and deal! Sounds a bit amateurish, but it might be fun to fool with a bit, and just see what it can do.

Things #8 and#9

I have set up my bloglines, and am getting information from a number of sources. I will have to see over time if I have chosen too many sources for news. This was a very easily organized site, and took very little time to get into.

Thing#5 or #6

Well, I got myself into Flikr. It was complicated, but possible. Adding photos was the hard part, as all of mine are in my email, and they have been sent to me by others. This whole 2.0 experience is fun, because it makes me go just beyond my comfort zone--I feel safer in google or yahoo.

Thing#5

Well, I have been playing around with this website trying to add to my blog. It is not easy to add a new entry, and it is not well explained. Frustration is rampant!

First Task

If I have to choose my least favorite path to learning, it would be mentoring, as this requires time and accommodation to another person's schedule. At this time, it is not an option. The one I favor is checking online or reading about something, as this can be done in my own time.

First Glimpse

This seems like a fun project. I could use some of the new technology in my next phase of life.
